Laura Sevigny - Wrappr

Laura Sevigny

Who are you and how did you start making art? Why do you make art?

Hi! I’m Laura and I’m a designer based out of Vancouver, Canada. I’ve always been creative but, if I’m being honest, I never really considered myself much of an artist because I was never a very good painter! A few years back, however, I started to play around with all sorts of creative mediums for fun and absolutely fell in love with paper cut art (it’s exactly what it sounds like!). Now, I create art almost everyday because it makes me happy and adds a bit more fun into the world.

What do you do to get into your creative zone?

Going for a walk always seems to spark my creativity. There’s something about being in nature and its endless horizon that helps my mind wander. Ironically, sitting at my desk can also get me into the creative zone because it’s almost like a message to my brain saying, “It’s go time!”

What is your inspiration? Or how has your personal experience influenced your creativity?

I love colour and shape. Since I didn’t think of myself as much of an artist growing up, I never really learnt the “rules” of art and design. Instead I go by feel and what I think looks good. This has generally led me to create simpler designs because I like its sense of balance and the fact that these designs typically have a timeless quality to them. But, don’t be fooled; simple does not always mean easy!

What is your most important artists’ tool, the one thing you couldn’t imagine creating without?

Okay I know it’s cliché, but my imagination is definitely my most prized tool. As an artist you have to be able to see something (or the potential in something) that others might not.

How has your practice changed over the past 2 years?

As I mentioned in the first question, I started my creative journey as a paper cut artist. More recently, I’ve begun to experiment with other kinds of art, like sketching, ink drawing, and, my current obsession, paint pen illustrations! I’ve also started purposefully scheduling time to “create,” which I never used to do. It can be all too easy to linger on a creative idea without taking action if you let yourself!

What is your dream creative project or dream team collaboration?

Wrappr was always a dream collaboration for me, so I am so excited to be able to officially check it off my goals list! Next in line for dream collaborations would probably be Lucy+Yak, I mean who doesn’t love dungarees?!

Who are your biggest influences (art, music, film, etc)?

Because of my roots in paper cut art, I’ve always been a huge fan of Paul Rand and Saul Bass. I’m also hugely inspired by Marimekko and their approach to timeless design.

What is the role of an artist in society?

Put simply, I think an artist’s role is to help spread joy.

Do you have any tips or practices to share with people who are making the lifestyle shift toward zero-waste and sustainable practices?

Don’t overthink it! Simple changes can have a big effect. If you don’t know where to start though, try carrying around a reusable bag in your pocket. You’ll be surprised how often they come in handy and how often you can skip using bags offered at stores.

What is the highlight of collaborating with Wrappr for you?

It’s so cool that the Wrappr community will get to experience the joy and excitement of my product.

What is your favourite way to use a Wrappr? Bonus points for originality!

In my hair!
