Who are you and how did you start making art?

Hi! I'm Kristin - an illustrator from Chicago. I started making art and creating at a very young age, but my career as an illustrator really began in June of 2020 when I left my website design job.

Why do you make art?

When I first started creating, it was more for my mental health (and still is), but the main focus has been using my art to rebuild that connection that humans and nature have lost.

What do you do to get into your creative zone?

I don't really have to do much to get into the creative zone. I just have this incredible itch to create. It's in my blood and I can't turn that passion off.

What is your inspiration? Or how has your personal experience influenced your creativity?

My main inspiration is nature and reconnecting to it. Nature is the one thing that really calms me. Coupling it with art is so therapeutic for me and I love that I can share that with others as well.

What is your most important artists’ tool, the one thing you couldn’t imagine creating without?

My ipad - I use it for every piece that I have created so far!

How has your practice changed over the past 2 years?

When I first started out, sketching was not a part of my process. I was really just focused on my intuitive nature to create. I now compose, sketch, and then start laying down color. I found that my compositions are much more thought out now because of this!

What is your dream creative project or dream team collaboration?

My dream project/collaboration would have to be with an interior designer. I have always wanted to work with interior designers to create custom work for their clients. I think it would be awesome to create something unique for different rooms of houses.

Who are your biggest influences (art, music, film, socials, activism etc)?

I remember the first time I came across Georgia O'Keefe's work. I was so intrigued with how much detail was in their pieces. It was a treasure hunt for your eyes and your soul. I carry that touch throughout my work.

What is the role of an artist in society?

Art has always been a visual way to represent my emotions, thoughts, and feelings. I think that artists have a beautiful way of creating visual language that sometimes words just don't do the theme justice. We as artists have the opportunity to express what we hold dear to us in a truly magical way.

Do you have any tips or practices to share with people who are making the lifestyle shift towards zero-waste and sustainable practices?

Baby steps. Use what you have first, then look for sustainable alternatives.

What is the highlight of collaborating with Wrappr for you?

I really appreciated how Wrappr allowed me to create something from my heart, to put my whole self in my work, and my design for this collection.

What is your favourite way to use a Wrappr

I love using Wrappr to wrap a gift for a friend. I love that the wrap is a great sustainable and functional option as opposed to traditional wrapping paper.
